We Need to Think Big for a New Tenant at the Aras but Spare Us the X Factor Contest! [Eire Region]
JOE Duffy's Liveline has done the State some service and of that there can be little doubt. From highlighting the scandal of the withdrawal of medical cards for pensioners, to the lack of proper cancer care services, to the more sublime 'Funny Friday' shows, Joe has a little bit of something for everybody. Recently however, in a mock presidential election programme, Liveline fell short of its usual high standards. Adi Roche, Mary O'Rourke and Fergus Finlay certainly have their attributes, but...
An Irish Everyman ; Comment [Eire Region]
HE WAS, for almost two decades, a Sunday night visitor to just about every house in the land. But, as Miley Byrne of Glenroe, Mick Lally did more than merely entertain the nation. He helped inform our evolution from rural frugality to Celtic Tiger vulgarity, from priest-ridden conservatism to pluralism.
Pull the Plug On Anglo ; Comment [Eire Region]
THE case for shutting down Anglo Irish Bank was made very clearly and very eloquently - by, among others, this newspaper's Mary Ellen Synon - a long time ago, and indeed long before we committed billions of euro of taxpayers' money to shoring up this zombie financial institution. Brian Lenihan begged to differ back then; incredibly, he still does.
Hse has Failed Our Children, yet Again ; Comment [Eire Region]
HAVE the tragic deaths of Tracey Fay, Daniel McAnaspie, David Foley and most recently, the appalling case of Christopher O'Driscoll taught the HSE nothing? On the weekend that a 12-year- old girl was killed in a Dublin suburb, another 12-year-old girl went missing - from a north Dublin care centre. Thankfully, unlike Michaela Davis, she has now been found alive and well. But the fact remains that a defenceless child who had been placed in the care of the State - for what we naively believed t...
She's so Graham Norton, but Who Is His Favourite Aosdana Artist? ; Talk of the Town [Eire Region]
IT'S not often that you hear a member of Aosdana, that artistic elite, becoming excited about Graham Norton. But then again, Pauline Bewick definitely isn't your typical artist. An exhibition of her work is about to open its doors at Taylor Galleries on Kildare Street in Dublin, and she was chuffed to receive a 'gorgeous' letter from the Cork-born BBC presenter and comedian.
Could This Be Lucky Xiii for Stuart Townsend? ; Talk of the Town [Eire Region]
FROM losing his girlfriend to an abortive blockbuster role, it has been a tough year for Stuart Townsend. So a starring role in a highly anticipated TV series should come as a welcome boost for the Irish actor. Stuart has landed the main part in the conspiracy thriller series XIII, which is based on the graphic novel of the same name that has sold 13million copies since its publication in 1985.
Where's the Music Gone? ; Letters [Eire Region]
Where's the music gone? The world is full of beautiful music -- men have been writing it for centuries. But where has it gone? Today, for hour after hour, we are presented with talentless would-be musicians vomiting out rubbish.
We're a Soft Touch ; Letters [Eire Region]
We're a soft touch FUrTher to those sham marriages (Mail), serious questions need to be asked here. A total of 384 applications were made by Pakistani people, of whom 110 were to marry Latvian citizens, 50 to Polish citizens and 47 to marry estonian citizens - so they could establish residency and benefits rights.
It's a Bloodbath ; Letters [Eire Region]
It's a bloodbath I LIveD in the North for 30 years, wondering every day what I was going to see with bombs and murders. Thankfully, that is over. I came over the border in the South and it's now like heaven.
Blair Is Not Welcome ; Letters [Eire Region]
IT IS not surprising that Irish artists, anti-war groups, etc., are indignant that former British prime minister Tony Blair may be a guest on the Late Late show and on a religious programme hosted by Gay Byrne. Blair will be in Ireland on Friday to help publicise his autobiography. even though he has stated that he will hand over Pounds 5million to the British Legion, relatives of dead servicemen and women said this is only blood money.
We've Let the Justice System Degenerate Into a Criminal Mess ; Letters [Eire Region]
The more I read about our justice and penal system, the more depressed I get. We'll never have a decent society until we have a massive reorganisation of both codes. Ignorance of the law is not accepted as an excuse for wrongdoing. But it should be.
Make Up Your Minds ; Letters [Eire Region]
Make up your minds The uncertainty over Anglo Irish Bank is disastrous for the country. It's crazy that Fianna Fail is saying one thing and the Greens another, while FF backbenchers snipe from the sidelines.
Ban Expenses Claims ; Letters [Eire Region]
Ban expenses claims IvOr CALLeLY seems to think he has done nothing wrong: if that's the mindset of our public representatives then that explains the huge payments to politicians regarding travel costs. We, the taxpayers, have spent billions on roads and public transport, so why are politicians not using it? They should be given a free travel pass and have their expenses claims abolished. Those claims are nothing more than a mugging of the taxpayer.
Enough Tipp-Bashing! ; Letters [Eire Region]
Enough Tipp-bashing! IT'S obvious that Tom ryan hates Tipperary hurling (Mail). I'm not a Tipp man but he blasts Liam Sheedy before the semi-final as not being able to manage a team because he never won an all-Ireland. he blames Tipp for the negative way hurling is played; he criticises the Tipp players for punching the air when they got a free.
