The record low turnout for the 28 March general elections enabled smaller parties to make gains at the expense of the main parties. Kadima, formed late last year by the now-incapacitated Ariel Sharon, became the largest party with 29 seats but failed to live up to opinion poll expectations. The Labour Party did well in winning 20 seats and the main loser was Likud, the former ruling party that was split so badly over Sharon's decision to withdraw settlers from Gaza, which has fallen to joint-third place with the ultra-orthodox Shas party with 12 seats in the Knesset. Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu now faces a very difficult period as his party reassesses its position. Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is now almost certain to become the new premier and his task over the next few weeks ...

FANS have blasted World Cup 2010 chiefs after England were given just 15,716 tickets -- while sponsors and VIPs get two million. Up to 50,000 England fans are expected in South Africa, but many thousands will miss out after FIFA allocated 55 per cent of the event's 3.7m tickets to favoured corporate groups. The tie against Slovenia on June 23 in Port Elizabeth sees an England allocation of just 4,715 seats.

It is, the Liberal Democrats would argue, an inevitable consequence of fairer voting, where the number of seats awarded to parties roughly equates to the proportion of votes they won in the last election. Since 1999 - and longer than that in local government - coalition has, however, become a fact of political life. In the Scottish Parliament, where the allocation of seats is more proportionate than in our Assembly, everyone takes for granted that coalition will be a permanent feature of the political landscape.
In Wales, perhaps because of the hubris of Labour, and also because of the length of time the party ha...

IT'S hard to imagine Tory leader David Cameron standing in the pouring rain of Azerbaijan. Nor, for that matter, going on tour to America last year or sitting on the car park that is the M6 on the days England play at Old Trafford. Yet he, and two of his henchmen, were sitting slap-bang in the middle of the official England Fans' allocation of seats for the game against Sweden on Tuesday.
Given that just 4,500 of 25,000 members have been given tickets to attend the World Cup, how on Earth did he get in, taking up three seats ahead of those who have travelled the world, taken time off work and spent a small fortune to watch England?
