TO mark Animal Aid's National Anti-Shooting Week, the campaign group's giant mascot visited MP Caroline Spelman's office to end the production of birds for game shooting.
Phileas the Pheasant visited the Meriden MP's office along with Animal Aid supporters who then asked residents to sign a petition calling for an end to the purpose of breeding of birds for shooting. Supporters also handed out Animal Aid's booklet, The Trouble with Shooting.

ANIMAL KORORO PLATFORM: Nintendo DS. PUBLISHER: Rising Star Games PRICE: Pounds 19.99 REVIEW: Helen Meynell IF you like cute animals and you're under about 12 you'll love Animal Kororo. Frogs, dogs, polar bears, pigs, pandas, cats - you name it, if it's cute, it will be featured in this game.
The premise is really simple - all you have to do is pair up the animals (panda with panda, no cross-breeding allowed!) so that they can get back to the animal kingdom, two-by-two, Noah's ark-style. Using the stylus, you roll one spherical animal over the board to its pal and then pack them off home. Of course, there are obstacles - you have to avoid hitting other animals, walls, balls and thorns - and it's a race against the clock.

A CIRCUS, even one which treats its animals well, is no place for an elephant. If you spend any time in the company of our biggest land mammal you'll see the same emotions and qualities in them as you do in humans -- love, compassion, loneliness, excitement and nervousness. Plus, of course, fear.
This is an emotion that arthritic, 59-year-old Anne will be familiar with. The poor animal was stabbed in the face with a pitchfork and smashed around the head with metal and wooden staves.

Britain is now braced for bird flu to reach its shores, with the public and the poultry industry urged to be vigilant following confirmation a duck in France had the deadly H5N1 strain. The Government said news the bird found near Lyon had died of the lethal strain of the virus made it 'more likely' bird flu would reach the UK. Animal Health Minister Ben Bradshaw said it was not inevitable the disease would spread to Britain, but that the most important thing was to identify any outbreak quickly. Britain has had a contingency plan in place for three and a half years and was well prepared, he said. 'The veterinary advice is the risk of imminent infection in the UK is still low but we must remain vigilant,' he said. 'We are appealing to poultry keepers to be ready to house their birds sho...

Film stars, serial killers and TV actors are just some of the 'celebrities' that live a wild life at Glen Afric Country Lodge in South Africa. On the day I arrived, the crew for UTV family drama Wild At Heart were all wearing memorial T-shirts for their favourite actor - the late, great Hamley: a tall, gentle fellow who liked to flirt with the make-up girls and destroy cars. One of his fellow thespians is well-established actor Jack, who is friendly with most people, but has killed four of his kinfolk with a swift kick of his back leg.
Near the lodge's entrance is Hamley the giraffe's grave, which marks the spot where a bolt of lightning struck him down in his seven-year-old prime. Dearly departed Hamley and Jack the zebra are just two of the muchloved animal stars of Wild At Heart and ...

WEATHER permitting, the moorlands of Northumberland and Durham will today ring out to the sound of shotguns as eager hunters enjoy "the Glorious Twelfth".
The traditional - and legally enshrined - opening to the grouse shooting season is a chance for marksmen to test their skills against birds that can reach 100kph as they fly up from the heather moorlands.
