A number of long-term unemployed and apprentices earning less than Pounds 3 an hour from Plymouth were among a group bussed into London to work as unpaid stewards during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. About 80 people, including those from the Westcountry, were said to have been involved as part of the Government's Work Programme. Some of the stewards have voiced a range of complaints, including that they were left to sleep under London Bridge ahead of going on duty at the Pounds 12 million river pageant on Saturday.

The Apprenticeship Works is one of a small number of nationally approved Apprentice Training Agencies, and the only one in the West Midlands to have met new rigorous quality standards set by the National Apprentice Service. The agency was set up in 2009 with the sole aim of helping employers cost effectively recruit young people to their business.
The Apprenticeships Works is different from traditional recruitment agencies. We employ the Apprentice, deal with wages, holidays and paperwork, and then simply hire the young person to you though a weekly agreement.

MADAM, - I was delighted to read Eric Webb's very accurate article about Derby Airport, Burnaston, together with the excellent photographs, which I immediately recognised as I had my first flying lesson there in an Auster.
The hourly training rate was Pounds 4, which doesn't sound very much today but at the time it was almost two weeks' wages for a first year engineering apprentice.

WHILE listening to the Chancellor giving his budget speech I heard him say once again he has promised thousands of youngsters the chance of an apprenticeship. My grandson was lucky to get an apprenticeship for car mechanics at a garage near to where he lived. He absolutely loved his job but, once qualified, the garage could no longer afford to pay the increase in his wages so he was sacked and another apprentice started at the low wage.
He has applied for lots of jobs to no avail. He either does not have enough qualifications or not got any experience or is under 21 years of age so driving and picking up accident damaged cars is out of the question due to the high insurance premiums.
