The application to demolish Alexander "Greek" Thomson's Egyptian Halls will inevitably raise a public outcry ("Threat to demolish historic Greek Thomson building", The Herald, May 5, 2011) . However it also poses bigger questions about how we value our most precious heritage. Alexander Thomson's public profile has increased greatly over the past generation, and now probably equals that of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Yet, like Thomson's now-demolished Queens Park Terrace, his streetscape buildings such as the Egyptian Halls lack the visibility and presence of his villas and churches.

WALKING past the old BBC building on Queen Margaret Drive in Glasgow last week I was saddened to see that what was left of the front entrance is bit by bit being carelessly destroyed. One of the original lamps at the doorway has been knocked over, while at least one of the ornaments on the balustrade has been smashed. It is yet to be seen what planned destruction and redesign will do to the once-beautiful hallway, but from what can be seen there appears to be no plan to recreate this.

Bristol has an unfortunate tradition of neglecting its architectural heritage. Fifty years ago, the Bath House Colonnade at Brislington was sold off to architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis to adorn his Portmeirion estate. Gerry Brooke and Katherine Baker find out more. It Was Stoke Bishop reader Valerie Brooks who wrote to Bristol Times about the Colonnade, a fine architectural feature which once, alongside the Black Castle and the Gateway, graced the Arnos Court estate at Brislington.

CAISTOR Arts and Heritage Centre, designed by local architect Jonathan Hendry, has won an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects. The centre was one of only three buildings in the East Midlands and 59 in the UK and Europe to receive a RIBA Award in recognition of its architectural excellence. It will now go forward for the RIBA Stirling Prize shortlist, recognising the best buildings of the year, which is due to be announced in the autumn. RIBA President Angela Brady said: "For nearly 50 years, the RIBA Awards have reflected the changing state of British architecture and revealed emerging design trends.
