WHAT do you do when you win a football as a prize in a high- school competition? For a group of sixteen students from the industrial city of Bremen, North-West Germany, the answer was as simple as the prize. You head back into the playground and create a football club. It was February 1899, and the sporting boom was well under way in Germany. Sportverein Werder Bremen von 1899 e. V. (or SV Werder Bremen) were not to be left behind, and the multi-sport club was soon formed.

Major General Sir Roy Redgrave, who has died aged 85, was awarded an MC in the last week of the Second World War in Europe, and afterwards commanded the Household Cavalry. On May 1 1945, Redgrave was leading a troop of the 1st Household Cavalry Regiment (1 HCR) west of the village of Dudenbuttel, near Bremen, when his armoured car was hit by bazookas and set ablaze.
