THERE is a rule about the service of Reconciliation in the Roman Catholic church (Letters), found in the Code of Canon Law.
When a service of Reconciliation takes place one must go to confession first as only during one's private confession to the priest, who is 'in alter christus', does the Catholic have sins forgiven. Four conditions are required by the penitent: examination of conscience, contrition, confession and satisfaction (making atonement for sins one has committed by carrying out prayers or good works asked of one by the priest).

THEY dress the men and women of God and they fill the bottles with holy wine to sustain the flow of souls into heaven, while down here on earth they pad the hassocks with a layer of foam rubber to comfort the knees of the faithful.
There is not a parade like this in any other factory in the UK. You can bow beneath the Last Supper or let your fingers linger on the staff of an ancient cross, held by devotees of Jesus when the sandals of friars still slapped the mud.

Dismayed at the Church of England's direction, the folk of St James the Great move ever closer to Rome
ST James the Great may almost be an understatement. Musically magnificent, liturgically levitating and choreographically coruscating, it is the church that - with the exception of Durham Cathedral - the column has most visited these past 17 years.

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Church in Ireland, it is with great concern that I write to you as Pastor of the universal Church. Like yourselves, I have been deeply disturbed by the information which has come to light regarding the abuse of children and vulnerable young people by members of the Church in Ireland, particularly by priests and religious. I can only share in the dismay and the sense of betrayal that so many of you have experienced on learning of these sinful and criminal acts and the way Church authorities in Ireland dealt with them.
As you know, I recently invited the Irish bishops to a meeting here in Rome to give an account of their handling of these matters in the past and to outline the steps they have taken to respond to this grave situation.
Together with senior officials of the Roman Curia, I listened to what they had to say, both in... abuse that has occurred within the Irish Catholic community, and to do so with courage and determina... tendency to avoid penal approaches to canonically irregular situations. JoAN Clayton was sitting on the veranda at her villa, overlooking the beautiful Atlantic under a clear blue sky, when her son showed her an article that would destroy her holiday - and Joan's life as she knew it. She had arrived in Lanzarote just days earlier with her husband, Bill Carney, looking forward to a two-week break from the demands of running their busy guest house in Scotland. Joan was hoping to relax, sunbathe and have a chance to plan with Bill their imminent retirement to the rolling Cotswolds in England.
Then her adult son Paul rang her mobile, sounding upset and urgent. He said he had to talk to her and left his own holiday on the Spanish mainland to meet Joan in Lanzarote.

A CONTROVERSIAL Scottish priest who became one of Britain's leading pro-life campaigners was yesterday hailed as a "doughty and heroic" fighter by the Catholic Church following his death at the age of 75.
Canon James Morrow, who spent much of his career as a parish priest on Royal Deeside, hit the headlines across Britain in the 1990s for his high-profile stance against abortion and so called "right-to-die" cases.
