January 12: The Caribbean island of Haiti is hit by an earthquake registering 7.0 on the Richter scale, leaving an estimated 230,000 dead and one million homeless. The largest city and capital, Port- au-Prince, is a disaster zone with many schools, hospitals and public buildings totally destroyed. International aid donations and pledges pour into the island to help the survivors and rebuild infrastructure. At the end of the year, many people are still homeless and a cholera outbreak has caused hundreds of deaths.

IslamOnline, one of the most popular Muslim websites, has a series of articles discussing homosexuality in "an Islamic and a scientific light", but the articles rely almost entirely on material from the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, a religious-based fringe psychiatric organisation in the US, which promotes "reparative therapy" for gay people. Even in Saudi Arabia, men eye each other in shopping malls and cruise the streets, seemingly un- deterred by the threat of jail, flog- ging or possible execution.\n There is no doubt that many traditional societies feel challenged by new (largely western) ideas about sexuality, gender identity, sexual orientation and the like.

The 0.6% rebound monthly consumer prices in June, lifting the annual rate close to the 4% upper ceiling, almost certainly cemented the case for an increase in the central bank's benchmark TPM rate at last week's monetary policy committee meeting. It therefore came as no surprise when the TPM rate was increased by 25 basis points to 5.25%, bringing it to the same level as the US Fed funds rate. And upward price pressures linked to volatility in the international economy may usher in at least one further rate rise in the near term. In the political sphere, President Michelle Bachelet has made several adjustments to her cabinet, partly reflecting dissatisfaction with the handling of recent events, which has found resonance with a decline in her own approval rating.

Bristol has many odd claims to fame, but surely few as curious as its role as the hotbed of the South American Mapuche nation's struggle for rights.
The work goes on behind the unmarked door of a terraced house in the middle of town, where Reynaldo Mariqueo beavers away in his role of general secretary of the Mapuche International Link.
