  • SCOTLAND'S First Minister Alex Salmond says Westminster should not interfere in any referendum on independence. But has he really considered what could happen if he breaks up the Union? Historian ANDREW ROBERTS imagines the consequences. THE SNP victory in the independence referendum of Tuesday, June 24, 2014 was impressive by any standards. Despite being held on the 700th anniversary of the battle of Bannockburn -- where Scotland's Robert the Bruce defeated the English forces under Edward II -- few independent commentators thought that as many as 60.4 per cent of Scots would vote Yes to the question 'Do you think Scotland should become independent and leave the United Kingdom?'

  • WHEN Labour swept to power in 1997 with a record 101 female MPs the new PM was pictured surrounded by "Blair Babes" (right). Ten years on, with Mr Blair set to announce his leaving date this week, only 67 are still MPs. Four have died, seven are now peers, 11 were voted out, one was dumped by the party, and 11 quit. Today we track down the missing faces to ask the question: Blair are they now? Check who's who in numbered key, right

In the blue corner is David 'Gentleman' Cameron, traditional in style, with a long reach, a solid chin - honed in the gymnasiums of Eton - and wearing Union Flag shorts. • One of the great advantages of independence is that it will give us an opportunity to rethink what a genuine security policy should be ("Salmond 'hypocrisy' over Scottish Defence Force", The Herald, January 20). We would no longer need to be part of the British warfare state, engaged in permanent military adventures and obsessed with its nuclear weapons. Irrespective of which party is in power at Westminster, militarism and nuclear posturing seem to be ingrained in the state's identity.

  • THERE is no better way to get yourself out of the kind of hole we find ourselves in than to grow your way out. All the emphasis to date has been on the debt which hangs round our neck like an albatross. But while it was right to worry about this, and to take measures to bring it under control, now we must fire up an engine whose sole purpose is growth. Where can this growth come from? It is easier to identify areas where it cannot and should not come from; namely the self-indulgent areas such as we had known for the decade before the credit crunch hit us in 2008.
