The Evangelical conversion of Gypsy groups worldwide has attracted the attention of ethnologists, anthropologists, ethnomusicologists, historians and sociologists. The problems discussed in the literature are connected with the influence of the 'new' religion on the way of life and identity of the converts. What are the changes that the believers undergo in their everyday lives? How do they celebrate holidays and festive occasions like weddings? What is happening with the group and the religious and ethnic self-awareness of individuals? Does Evangelism lead to a kind of unification of the culture of separate Gypsy groups, which in turn results in the loss of part of the identity of the communities? Bulgaria is an interesting example of the spread of Evangelical Christianity among Gypsy ...

The article explores the social, cultural and economical processes that lead Roma children into labour and their own interpretations of the value and risks of working. Based on qualitative research in several Roma communities in Romania the article analyses the different family strategies in coping with the economic difficulties of transition and the place of children in this process. The article is interested in the relationship between children and family, school and community and attempts to decipher what aspects in these relations encourage early entry into work. It argues that Roma children do occasional, poorly skilled, work that is relevant in their family economy, but invisible in and acceptable for broader society. Ultimately, the article argues that casting the situation of Ro...

Financial misrepresentation has usually been analysed by large-scale empirical research. However, the generality gained from such an approach is at the cost of understanding the rich and complex nature of financial misrepresentation in real organisations. We adopt a case study approach to gain more insight into the incentives, embedded in contracts, which trigger decisions to engage in financial misrepresentation and the underlying elements of discretion in these processes. In particular, we examine whether contractual incentives should be considered as endogenous or exogenous and we take a more integrated and dynamic perspective than is typical. Our findings demonstrate that in order to understand the decision processes of real managers it is necessary to distinguish between negotiable...

IT is not racist to worry about the impact of immigration, MPs declared yesterday. A report by the Labour-led Communities and Local Government Committee found that fears over high immigration stem from 'genuine anxieties' and not from 'racist or xenophobic sentiments.' These include concerns about the impact of migrants on the Health Service, schools, social care, policing and housing.

The birth of this nation will take more than flags and anthems. It faces three separate refugee crises, along with the threat of a war with the North and the seizure of its oil wells. By every measure it is one of the poorest countries in the world, and by some the poorest of all. The most brutal band of killers anywhere in Africa roams freely in part of its territory. It has a home guard armed with bows and arrows. No nation has come to independence in less propitious circumstances. They call it separation. By an overwhelming margin of nearly 99 per cent in a referendum in January, the people of South Sudan, as the country will be known, voted to separate from the North. The new nation will come into being on July 9. The onset of independence has prompted a wave of migration by returne...
