A TEESSIDE manufacturing business is set to take its materials loading system into new overseas markets after landing a pounds 200,000 investment boost. Xena Systems' innovative LoadSwift system is designed to both increase productivity by at least 75% and halve costs for construction firms building multi-storey structures.
The system has been used successfully on a range of construction projects over the past few years, and Xena is now looking to capitalise on the recovery in the construction industry by increasing production to meet growing demand.

ON behalf of Waygood Gallery & Studios' board of directors I wish to clarify several points made in your article on September 24.
The funding shortfall, delays and subsequent increase in costs have been due to the location and the construction of the historic warehouse in the medieval heart of the city in the centre of Grainger Town. The poor quality of the original construction - which, needless to say, does not comply with current building regulations - required both new foundations and a number of related structural repairs and renewals. During the course of these several delays, the cost of materials escalated.

Values of commercial property could be buoyed by the introduction of Energy Performance Certificates, an agent has predicted.
The introduction of EPCs and tougher building regulations will increase the costs of new construction, resulting in a fall in supply of commercial properties. This will help the value of standing investments hold up, according to David Findlay, partner at East Midlands commercial property agent King Sturge.

THE introduction of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and tougher building regulations will increase the costs of new construction but the resulting fall in supply should mean the value of standing investments will hold up well.
As long as the "real" economy grows by 2% or more, occupiers will continue to seek new accommodation. We anticipate a continued low level of investment transactions in the first half of 2008, with true market prices still generally below current valuation levels. However, valuations are catching up.

THE redevelopment of Glasgow's Scotstoun Stadium is running at almost 25-per cent over its previous budget.

With material prices rising and build costs set to increase in 2011, Birmingham based Fusion Building Consultancy claims it is seeing more companies looking at setting up their own construction arms.
The move to take on the risk of building their own projects is not just cost driven, however, said Gavin Stephens, Fusion's director, "It's about having control. There is a real concern over a second band of insolvencies hitting the industry which is denting client confidence over some construction companies longevity." A survey by insolvency specialist Begbies Traynor reported an anticipated 10 per cent rise in insolvencies in 2011, with the construction sectors in particular looking to feel the pinch, mainly because of a drop in public sector tenders.

Output increased by 0.8% but it still stood 4.8% below its year-ago level and the increase is modest given the 14.0% peak-to-trough decline experienced during the recession. [...] the rebound was concentrated in investment goods - whose production increased by 4.0% in the quarter, led by transport equipment -with intermediate goods up just 0.3% and consumer goods' output down again by 1.0%.
