  • IT IS truly depressing to hear someone say they've been forced out of business because their outlay is greater than their income. Recently there's been a proliferation of failed businesses as the recession tightens its grip. There are other reasons, though, that cause businesses to fail as the tenant of The Talisman public house, Kevin Johnson, knows only too well.

  • I read Kate Ironside every week in an effort to find something tangible about our one-sided connection with the European Union. I can see no enlightenment in her latest epistle. We all know that the unification of Europe was a long-standing German pipe dream. That dream has been shattered by the introduction of the single currency and the restrictive practices that go with it. No matter what decisions are made, there is only one solution to cure the present problem. That is to condemn the hated euro to death, allowing each country in the eurozone to control its own individual currency and exchange rate by returning the means to do so.

  • JUST for a moment, imagine being a tourist in search of the full British experience. Where would you start? Well, you might take a sight-seeing trip around London on a red double-decker bus. You'd possibly visit a quintessentially British store, such as Boots the chemist, Selfridges or Harrods, before having a proper English tea at the Savoy, Fortnum & Mason or the Dorchester.

  • IN his recent Soapbox contribution, Kenneth Moreton made a reasoned defence of trades unions but his examples of union achievements did not include any of their failures. He made no reference to the fact that, between the two world wars, the unions were infiltrated by Communist agents who trained the more radical members how to use the democratic process to gain control.

  • THE recent First Person article by Mr Asquith-Cowan quite rightly confirmed without doubt, Margaret Thatcher was one of the most formidable leaders that Britain had in the past century, apart from Winston Churchill. A sentiment many will agree with, but the article then went on to peddle left-wing myths regarding Margaret Thatcher.
