Today is the final deadline for farmers to submit their Single Farm Payment applications to the Rural Development Service to obtain their subsidy payment. The initial deadline was May 16 and all applications received after that day will have been subject to a 4% reduction for every working day that they were late.

SMALL businesses across Plymouth should make a New Year's resolution to complete their selfassessment tax returns now and avoid hefty fines, a local tax specialist has warned. Alex Smith, who runs TaxAssist Accountants, based in Stoke, said that although the official deadline for payment is not until January 31, 2011, many owner managers get caught up in the Christmas and New Year rush, ending up paying unnecessary penalties.

NORTH East farmers are again being advised to consider opting to receive their Single Farm Payment in euros rather than pounds sterling, in order to escape currency fluctuations. The deadline for payment applications is April 4, but farmers who request money in pounds could lose some of the value when it is changed at the European Central Bank, due to volatile exchange rates.

SPL chairman Lex Gold is optimistic a new live television contract will be secured in time for the start of the season after formally terminating the ailing deal with Setanta yesterday. The failure of the Irish broadcaster to meet a final deadline for an outstanding payment of GBP 3 million to the SPL left Gold and his fellow board members with no option but to begin the process of selling the rights elsewhere.

THERE are calls for new European rules on late payment to be implemented as soon as possible to help small businesses. The European Parliament's Late Payment Directive, which will introduce new rules for a standard deadline for payment and will encourage companies to honour payments for goods or services in a timely fashion, recently won backing from MEPs.

• Dundee Players Go Unpaid Again ; Crisis Club Stand On Brink [Scot Region]

THE very future of Dundee Football Club hangs in the balance this morning -- with a move into administration almost certain. Players and staff have been left unpaid once again after the club failed to meet yesterday's deadline to settle wages that should have been honoured last week. It forced some players to stay away from Dens Park amid claims they can no longer afford to travel to training from Glasgow and Edinburgh. Dundee owe HMRC Pounds 365,000 in unpaid taxes relating to a fourmonth period earlier this year and were recently hit with a final demand for payment in full. The deadline for paying that sum is expected to pass today.
