AS the eurozone economic crisis continues unabated to cries of Armageddon, it is perhaps time for a little perspective. Hungarian citizens are facing a future more desperate even than that of Greece or Spain. Not only is Hungary feeling the pain of economic stagnation and an immense national deficit, her very democracy is in grave danger.
In 2010, the right-wing Fidesz party won a two-thirds parliamentary majority, enabling it to make sweeping unilateral constitutional changes. The new January 2012 constitution drew strong criticism from Amnesty International, the EU and US and includes a media law severely restricting the media's independence and an electoral law gerrymandering the system in Fidesz's favour. Laszlo Kover is a founding member of Fidesz and Speaker of the Hungarian Natio...

. ITALIAN centre-left leader Romano Prodi has rejected the idea of forming a German-style "grand coalition" with rival Silvio Berlusconi, whom he defeated in a bitterly close general election.
The electoral law has allotted us a number of seats in the Chamber (of Deputies) and in the Senate which will allow us to govern," Prodi told journalists in Rome yesterday. Berlusconi has so far refused to concede defeat.

WE elect our politicians to make the big decisions for us and we hold them accountable when they get it wrong. Voters are not accustomed to having to make the key decision themselves.
That will all change next year when the people of Wales will have to decide whether the National Assembly for Wales should be granted further law-making powers from Westminster - in addition to voting in the National Assembly elections and a UK referendum on electoral reform itself.

MY WIFE and I were members of the Unite union for a short period until about three years ago. We recently each received ballot papers for the election of the General Secretary.
I contacted the Electoral Reform Society and discovered that, as expected, they send out ballot papers from a list of eligible voters provided by the union. I asked if, having ballot papers, it was against the law for us to use them. I was told that the papers were sent to us and they were ours to do with as we wished.

SINCE the hated NHS reforms were presented to Parliament the Tories have raked in pounds 170,000 from donors set to benefit from the changes.
Wealthy backers who have links to private healthcare firms have given the money to the Conservatives in the 14 months since the Health Bill was published.

I do not understand why the Western Morning News and Councillor Mark Kaczmarek take such exception to second home owners being charged less than the full rate of Council Tax (WMN Oct 31) Do these second home owners make the same demands on local council services as full time residents? Are their children educated in Cornwall? Of course not, so why can you not grasp the idea of value for money? They spend little time in your precious county but you pretend they should subsidise permanent residents by paying the full whack. No way!
Then Andrew George MP wants to take away their right to vote in local elections (WMN Nov 1). If I were forcibly removed from the electoral role I would refuse to pay Council Tax at all: No Taxation Without Representation lost us the American colonies 200 years ...

The bodies of two youths will be exhumed by South African prosecuting authorities next month, reopening a 24-year-old mystery which put Winnie Mandela in the frame for their murder. The move has been delayed until after this weekend's conference by the ruling African National Conference. Winnie Mandela is an ANC MP.
Lolo Sono and Sibuniso Tshabalala were last seen - seeming to have been severely beaten - with Mrs Mandela in her Soweto home in November 1988. Until September this year, South African authorities have denied any knowledge of their whereabouts.
... with this Mangaung thing [the ANC's electoral conference], they said we must wait until January ...

There are so many great things about living in Birmingham - its ethnic diversity, canals, baltis, the Christmas market, Iron: Man, the Clent Hills, the Wellington real ale pub - that it's hardly surprising that one sometimes gets overlooked.
But beyond the boundaries of the metropolitan West Midlands there are many - yes, there must be - who envy the fact that we elect our esteemed city councillors one-third at a time and so have local elections in three years out of four with a fair degree of predictability.

THE Electoral Commission has today admitted that the Assembly election in May was "somewhat overshadowed" by the disqualification of two Liberal Democrat Assembly Members.
The commission was forced to apologise for linking to inaccurate information on the Welsh version of its website which stated the bodies a candidate must not belong to.
