  • THE annual electoral canvass is in full swing, and the message from Gloucester City Council is to update your details as soon as possible to retain the right to vote. Forms have been coming through the letter boxes of city residents in the last few months, asking households to update their details for the electoral register, which is published in December. Households, who have not sent their form back, registered online or via the telephone, will be getting a reminder form this week. Those that do not on the register will be unable to vote in the council elections in 2012.

  • BRITAIN will have to bring in online voting because more of us are doing the weekly grocery shop over the internet, the UK's elections watchdog has said. The head of the Electoral Commission, Jenny Watson, insisted that democracy would have to keep pace with the 'way we live our lives' - as young people and the 'Ocado' generation find the old-fashioned system off-putting.

  • Q I recently opened an online saver account linked to my current account and Visa debit card. To verify the transaction I was asked three security questions. These were: which of these phone numbers have you had; which of these addresses have you lived at; and the last, which horrified me, was in which age range is your daughter - and then they gave me her first name and middle initial. I am outraged that this information is known by the financial services companies and used by them. It feels as though Big Brother really exists. I phoned Verified by Visa to complain, and it said the security questions were generated by the credit-reference agency Equifax. I phoned Equifax, who said they only used information supplied by my bank. I phoned my bank who said they have nothing to do with it ...

  • 1. This is the judgment on the second stage of the trial of a claim for libel and malicious falsehood. The first stage of the trial was a preliminary issue, to determine what the words complained of actually meant. This issue was determined by myself at first instance: Cruddas v Calvert [2013] EWHC 1427 (QB) (5 June 2013) (``the 5 June judgment''), but my judgment was varied in one respect by the Court of Appeal in their judgment [2013] EWCA Civ 748 (21 June 2013). At this second stage of the trial I have to determine all the remaining issues in the case. 2. The case is about the conduct of the Claimant (``Mr Cruddas'') in his capacity as the Treasurer of the Conservative Party (``the Party''). It is part of the function of a Treasurer to raise funds for the Party. The evidence has covered...

Fine Gael and Labour will meet Brian Lenihan today to ensure an orderly but accelerated passage of the Finance Bill, most likely leading to an election on Friday, February 25, instead of March 11 as announced earlier by the Taoiseach.

  • DESPITE my well-publicised misgivings about the usefulness of the post, I did cast a vote in last week's Police and Crime Commissioner elections. In fact I cast two, the Government having chosen to interpret our decisive rejection of the Alternative Vote in elections for MPs as not applying to any other elections they might dream up.
