Cyprus The international community's effort for a reunified Cyprus to join the EU was dashed last week. The plan was backed by the 200,000 Turkish Cypriots but rejected by the 600,000 Greek Cypriots. The result means that EU membership applies to only the larger, Greek southern part of the island.
