  • Cyprus The international community's effort for a reunified Cyprus to join the EU was dashed last week. The plan was backed by the 200,000 Turkish Cypriots but rejected by the 600,000 Greek Cypriots. The result means that EU membership applies to only the larger, Greek southern part of the island. This week, the Turkish Cypriots were rewarded for their endorsement of the plan with a (pounds) 200m package of aid from the EU, much of which will go towards upgrading the the tourism industry. Turkey had a special interest in reunification as its own move to join the European club is linked to the island's future.
