AFTER an unrelenting stream of letters to The Herald since the beginning of 2011 - generally complaining of the uselessness of wind farms to produce more than risible levels of power - it seems ironic that Scottish operators had to shut down turbines because the grid could not handle the power supplied by Katia's bountiful gales ("Wind farm operators are due windfall after storm", The Herald, September 14). With advancing global warming, such stormy conditions will become increasingly common, so finding an answer to the problem of power surges overwhelming the grid - as well as to the general problem of intermittency - is essential. Solutions already exist in the form of massive energy storage (MES) facilities, which must be introduced to complement fully renewable power stations.
