THE ATHLA ETE Cert PG, 92 mins THIS is the dramatised story, filled out with historic clips, of Abebe Bikila, the son of a poor Ethiopian shepherd, who won the marathon at the Rome Olympics in 1960 and thus became the first African to win gold at the Games. He was given shoes for the race but rejected them and ran barefoot. An instant hero throughout the continent, he was only prevented from winning at the Olympics three times by an injury when leading. Made by Davey Frankel and Rasselas Lakew (who also plays Bikila), the essential simplicity of this tale about a true hero is often very moving.
