So the G8 politicians are going to talk about the food we waste. I wonder if they will remember that they were the same politicians who invented the "sell-by date" and "best-before" system, which has caused this problem?
Those of us who suffered a shortage of food in the 1940s and 1950s will remember our mothers using stale bread to make bread pudding or bread-and-butter pudding (using margarine).

Ihauled a suitcase of books with me for a lazy week in Tunisia, but you'd have to be blind to the wonders around you to get lost in a novel there. This may be the perfect place for a recharge - there's no shortage of relaxing, beautiful beaches, tasty local food and sunny weather - but it's also a fascinating place to explore, rich in history and full of friendly people desperate to tell you about their colourful country.
I went with my partner prepared for a week of doing nothing but both of us were quickly caught up in the magic of this extraordinary place.

FOR as long as I can remember, I have wanted to travel the world - - and forget for a while that I have cystic fibrosis (CF). It is a disease that I was born with and it affects the lungs and digestive system, causing them to become clogged with thick, sticky mucus.
I will die from it, although I don't know when. I am 24 -- the average life expec tancy is 35.

There is no need to worry about a shortage of home-grown food - the City of London's highly successful financial services industry will allow us to import whatever we need from anywhere in the world. So said the Chancellor earlier this year, when farmers voiced concern that declining production was putting Britain's food security at risk.
Now, only a few short months later, we have banner headlines proclaiming that greedy City traders will be clamped down on to prevent the excessive risk taking that has led to their six- and seven-figure annual bonuses. And it is not just a few high-flyers earning this kind of money.

IT is all too easy to believe that manufacturing in the UK is in a sorry state, but the extent of that decline is often exaggerated. Manufacturing's share of total output has fallen in all the developed economies. In the UK today it is similar to France but bigger than in the US. This falling share is the result of economic growth because as people earn higher incomes they spend more on services and a smaller proportion on food and manufactured goods. We have plenty of high-value manufacturing companies from small science and technology based start-ups all the way up to large firms like Rolls-Royce.
There is a real skills shortage in all kinds of engineering, including software development. Who could argue with the suggestion that too many clever young people became financial engineers ...

WHEN you buy this newspaper - or read it online, whichever is your choice - you know what you're getting. If it says 'The Citizen' on the front page, then it's The Citizen.
It's a simple enough concept but up to the time I'm writing this, many people in authority seem unable to get their heads around it.

AS recent Herald Express headlines and a thought-provoking leading article on 'food queues' have reminded us, these difficult times are proving particularly challenging for some members of our community.
Luckily, as we're regularly reporting, there's no shortage here in Torbay of voluntary and charity groups determined to do what they can to make life easier for those who need help.

FOOD producers have warned that devastating Arctic weather conditions this spring could lead to a huge hike in food prices on supermarket shelves.
According to figures released yesterday by the British Retail Consortium (BRC), food price inflation was at 3.5% in March, while farmers across Wales have seen lamb and crop production hit by huge snow falls. Even before this week's snow, which left sheep farmers facing their worst crisis for 60 years, consumer analysts warned that the figure for food inflation could rise to 6% in the coming months.
