  • MORE than three years ago my web developer at Refresh Creations wrote an article which I published dealing with the question of formatting a hard drive so that the contents were completely unrecoverable. Whether you plan to sell your computer on at the end of its life, recycle it, give it to charity or even chuck it at the tip, it is imperative that you dispose of any potentially sensitive data on the hard drive.

  • Music on demand in every room in the house was the aim. So I bought yards and yards of speaker cable, wired it up to the audio out connection at the back of the immense stacking system in the living room, and when I wanted music in the bedroom I carried the speakers there. Same with the kitchen, even the bathroom. With doors open, I could even skip tracks and adjust volume with the remote control. It worked, but it wasn't exactly efficient. The advent of the iPod changed all that. Now every room has a speaker dock, instead of lumping around speakers, I simply plug the iPod in wherever I happen to be. But even that's wearing thin. There are better options out there.

  • Still cluttering your house with CDs or (for music lovers of a certain age) cassette tapes? If so, an MP3 player could set you free. But how do you get 20,000 songs on to a device the size of a cigarette packet and which model best suits your needs? Most people have heard of the iPod, but it's just one of dozens of MP3 players on the market. MP3 stands for MPEG-1 (Motion Picture Experts Group) Layer 3, but all you need to know is that it's simply the most convenient way to carry music around. It works by squeezing (or, to use the technical term, compressing) information in digital audio files, allowing you to fit every CD, cassette and LP you've ever owned into one tiny gadget.

  • You can carry an entire library of music in your pocket with MP3 players such as the iPod. The songs are saved in compressed digital files so you can fit a lot into a small electronic space. Every MP3 player has a memory, either a hard drive or flash memory (like those found in digital cameras). To put music on your MP3, you can convert music from your CDs into MP3 files (called importing or ripping) or buy the music online from, for example, www.apple.com/itunes or www.amazon.co.uk. If you have an iPod, you need to download the iTunes software to your computer before you can add your music. Ripping CDs is easy. Just put one in your computer disc drive, and iTunes will give you the option to import it. When a CD is ripped, the file needs to be compressed - this is called the bit rate, w...

  • On a quiet Home Counties road in January, a 35-year-old father of three is driving a Skoda between leafy verges. It's an everyday scene. A bend approaches. The car hardly slows, carrying a racing line through the curve and immediately accelerating up a short hill, gathering so much speed that at the crest it takes off , all four wheels leaving the ground before slamming back down, taking another tight corner with a squeal of tyres and disappearing in a cloud of dust. This is no ordinary driver on no ordinary road (this is Millbrook, a private test track in Bedfordshire). But it is an ordinary car - and parked nearby are a Mercedes, a BMW, a Ford, a Vauxhall and a Jaguar, all waiting to be given the same treatment. You wouldn't look twice at them if you were here, and that's the point. D...

  • Very occasionally, you find a product so far ahead of its time it feels like it has fallen through a wormhole from the future. Then you look at the price tag, and realise it might as well have remained in the year 3000 for all the chance you have of ever owning it. Thankfully, Meridian's new multi-room Sooloos music streamer is built around clever software, so it's the sort of technology that will filter down to us pretty quickly from the palaces of the rich and famous - even if it now has a price tag of around Pounds 10,000 for a three-room system.
