A GOVERNMENT minister will today hail the way that the Union flag is being "reclaimed" from the extreme right as a symbol of the whole nation.
Baroness Amos, the Leader of the Lords who came to Britain from Guyana as a nine-year-old in the 1960s, will say attitudes to the flag were changing as the contribution of black and Asian people to British life was increasingly recognised.

OVER my last 20 years of adventure, exploration and mountaineering I've been called a hero, an inspiration, a living legend, a lunatic and an irresponsible madman.
I've seen sunrises over the Himalayas, sunsets off Sumatra, hacked through the jungles of Guyana in a safari suit, carried champagne into the highlands of Ethiopia and cooked Fray Bentos tinned pies in the mountains of India.

STEPH Twell provided the sole highight on a disappointing night for Scotland in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium when she claimed a bronze medal in the 1,500 metres - the first Scottish woman to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the event. The 21-year-old was one of just half a dozen Scots hopefuls in the track-and-field programme but, in the end, was the only one to secure a place on the podium.
It was both a gutsy and intelligent performance from Twell, who took the lead midway through the race after a slow start, thus ensuring the pace was quick enough to give her a chance against the fast finishers.
