Churchdo wn Marguerite Hazell 01452 713919 -- The guest speaker at Chosen Hill School's "Celebrating Success" evening on September 15 was Helen Penberthy, who was a pupil there in the 70s. She congratulated the award winners and remembered just how she felt awaiting her turn to receive an award for History. Helen admitted she didn't have a clue at that time as to the type of career she wanted, but started work for Babcock International Group in Plymouth. The company operates on a three-mile site of the river, primarily to repair and refit the Royal Naval fleet - from nuclear submarines to surface warships. They employ a wide variety of skilled people from nuclear physicists to welders, from accountants to painters, from specialist design staff to electrical and mechanical fitters. HMS V...

WHOOSH! THE BUILDERS' LIFT AT THE SHARD ZOOMS up to the 31st floor of the skeletal skyscraper and the doors open to reveal what will one day be a public area buzzing with plush restaurants and cocktail bars. Renzo Piano, the 73-year-old Italian architect of the building, steps out of the lift to admire the view. He breathes in the dusty air and smiles contentedly at the heady scent of a construction site in full swing. 'I love all this,' he says, gesturing to the machine pumping concrete to the top of the building, its rhythmic beat sounding like a gigantic heart. 'Designing is OK, but what excites me is making.' He walks across to the windows and looks out over the City. Way down below us, Toytown size, we can see Tower Bridge and, across the river, St Paul's and the Gherkin. To the ri...

New Street architects told to ensure enough access for cars I hope the planners and developers stand up to the councillors. Here is the point: how much space is provided for cars at the main London stations? NONE.
New Street handles about 25 million passengers a year compared with Waterloo (86 million), Victoria (70 million), Liverpool Street (52 million), London Bridge...in fact there are 13 London stations which handle more passengers that New Street and none have car parking or car drop off provision on any worthy scale and yet there are no problems. I suggest the planners do their research and tell the councillors NO. Learn from others Brum, learn from others.

For most, house hunting can be a hassle-filled chore. The mind- numbing trawl through property pages and websites, dealing with estate agents and traipsing through dozens of strangers' houses can all take the gloss off the big move. But as we revealed yesterday, footballer Craig Bellamy is the latest celebrity to snap up a plush Welsh home, and so we asked property experts to reveal how busy stars take the stress out of the process. Gareth Davies, a valuation surveyor for upmarket Cowbridge estate agents Watts and Morgan, explained that while the rest of us have to fit viewings around our hectic working lives, it seems the rich and famous can employ agents to scour the country for suitable properties, negotiate a price and even smooth things over with anxious neighbours. 'There are spec...
