  • CARDIFF law firm Hugh James has established a new tax practice following the recruitment of Stephen Williams from the City. Mr Williams, who previously worked in London for international law firms Clifford Chance and Addleshaw Goddard, has broad experience in all aspects of business, property and personal taxation. Over the last 15 years he has worked with public and private companies, partnerships, entrepreneurs, landowners and individuals. Having previously worked at Pricewaterhouse-Coopers, Mr Williams qualified as a solicitor in 2001, and he advises on corporate and personal tax planning issues including entrepreneurs' relief, capital allowances, employee share schemes, inheritance tax and capital gains tax.

  • The government last week asked the US to resume the stalled free-trade negotiations despite warnings from Venezuela and Bolivia that the deal endangers the survival of the Andean Community bloc. However, prospects for a quick resumption of talks have been undermined by US concerns over the recently approved oil reform law.   • AN experienced tax specialist has joined chartered accountants and business advisers Clive Owen & Co. Simon Briton has been appointed as senior tax manager bringing with him considerable experience in accountancy and legal professions. The focus of his work is on finding tax savings for businesses in the region, particularly in respect of commercial property and technology. Briton moved from the North East to London in 1998, where he worked for global accountancy firms handling a wide range of matters for international clients. He qualified as a chartered tax adviser in 2001. He also worked for a leading London law firm and he qualified as a tax solicitor in 2003.
