IN THE QUEST to rid our homes of daily grime, most of us have a cache of bleach bottles, anti-bacterial fluids and sweet-smelling sprays in the kitchen cupboard. But in the process of wiping out those harmful germs, are we exposing our families to a very different kind of health risk? Researchers in Australia believe they have identified a significant link between asthma in young children and exposure to the fumes from everyday cleaning products, known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The scientists compared cleaning fluids used in the homes of 88 toddlers who had asthma to those used in the houses of 104 toddlers who did not. Those youngsters who lived with a high level of VOCs were four times more likely to suffer from asthma.
