THE Denver Dark Knight shootings: first thing to note - despite the uninformed Irish wails about American gun laws - is that the number of guns per head in America is irrelevant to such a crime. If ownership of a weapon equalled homicidal intent, the ten most murderous countries in the world would include Switzerland, Finland and Sweden. And the 15 most murderous would include France, Canada, Austria and Iceland.
I obtained those figures from an annual research project at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. It is the sort of place that produces international heavies, from the former chairman of the Swiss National Bank to executives at the International Red Cross and the International Labour Organisation.

INDEPENDENT Labour peer Lord Stoddard of Swindon asked the Government by written question whether Japan, Canada, Singapore and Morocco would have to adopt the laws and regulations that govern the European Union before they will be able to trade with the EU countries in the single market.
Those countries are currently in trade negotiations with the EU The reply received from Trade Minister Lord Green confirmed: "It is not the case that the countries concerned will have to adopt all the legislation and regulations that apply to EU members." The minister also stated that duties levied on the goods exported by these countries are to be all but scrapped.

ON April 7, when Trenton Oldfield swam into the path of the 158th Oxford-Cambridge boat race, he received a few laughs but little sympathy. The 36-year-old Australian "urbanist" claimed he was protesting against elitism and inequality but to most his actions appeared naive and reckless -- at least until he was jailed earlier this month and became an unlikely martyr.
You did nothing to address inequality by giving yourself the right to spoil the enjoyment of others," Judge Anne Molyneux told him, accusing him of "prejudice" against the very elite he was protesting about. She then sentenced him to six months in prison under the public nuisance laws, the charge having been increased from a minor public order offence following apparent pressure from government.

This was once the capital city of capitalism, the great roaring furnace at the very centre of America's rise to world power and greatness. Stalin wanted to copy it on the banks of the Volga, but found he couldn't replicate its spirit - or its cars. Aldous Huxley's great prophetic novel Brave New World was written on the assumption that the ideas of its founder, Henry Ford, especially that 'history is bunk', would one day take over the planet. He may yet turn out to be right.
Certainly, Ford's desire for a world of vast massproduction factories in which the workers were paid enough to keep the economy going by buying their own products seems to be coming true. But nowadays it is mainly coming true in China and South Korea, and failing in Detroit itself. America's fabled rise to world pow...

NOT VERY long ago, these small but elegant rooms were filled with the sound of familiar voices above the gentle clink of crystal and cutlery and the low hum of a welloiled engine.

A MASKED gunman shot dead one person inside a Montreal theatre where the leader of Quebec's pro-independence Parti Quebecois was celebrating a narrow election win in the Canadian province.
The shooting came after preliminary results showed Parti Quebecois (PQ) pipped the ruling Liberals in Tuesday's election and would have to be content with a minority government, effectively ruling out another referendum on breaking away from Canada.

News that the US Government is advising Great Britain that it should remain a member of the EU, or expect to be sidelined by America regarding future imports or exports, is absolutely incensing. Is this the way that Americans believe democracy works? Many people believe, like me, that Great Britain will only become stronger and richer if we stand on our own two feet once again. It appears as if we will get the chance to vote on the issue at last, after David Cameron's speech a few day ago.
It is fair to say that we must be diplomatic regarding other countries' opinions - but we must avoid being other countries' poodles. I have lived long enough to have seen industries taken away from Britain and deposited across the Channel. At the time, blame was directed towards the labour force in th...
