  • KYRON SULLIVAN of Wales shot a steady, two-under-par second round 70 to set the clubhouse target in the Madeira Island Open yesterday. Sullivan failed to reproduce the putting brilliance he showed in his first-round 64 at Santo da Serra, but three birdies and one bogey gave him a one-shot lead over playing partner David Higgins.

  • As the woman screamed out loud and turbulence racked the plane, I hoped the rest of the holiday would be better than the landing. Although the volcanic island, caught between Europe and Africa, is recognised for its stunning vistas and reliably gorgeous weather, I couldn't escape the image of Madeira's 320 square miles as a sedentary stomping ground for retirees.

  • NOW is a good time to start thinking about booking ferry travel to the Continent. Fares rise significantly closer to the departure dates in peak holiday times, and crossings sell out com-pletely on the busiest weekend sail-ings on longer routes to western France and Spain. Also, National Ferry Fortnight kicks off next Saturday, and for book-ings made between March 2 and 16, operators will offer some enticing deals. For example, Brittany Ferries will include free travel for two children plus a free day cabin for car book-ings made on daytime sailings on conventional ferries to and from France. That can amount to a saving of more than Pounds 150 - and the deal will apply to almost all crossings throughout 2013. In addition, new EU regulations have strengthened ferry passengers' rights whe...

  • Welshman Kyron Sullivan carded a second-round 70 to set the clubhouse target in the weather-interrupted Madeira Island Open. Sullivan was unable to reproduce the fireworks of his opening 64 at Santo da Serra, but three birdies and one bogey gave him a ten- underpar halfway total of 134.

  • An estate agent's lot is not a happy one -- not when your patch has been hit by torrential rains causing floods, mudslides and widespread devastation. Not when the homes you were selling have been swept away, the infrastructure destroyed and at least 42 people killed.

  • Why visit? Set in the historic village of Sledmere and surrounded by rolling hills and countryside, The Triton Inn is just a 40- minute drive from east Hull but a world apart in terms of setting - particularly the weather. As my best friend and I drove down Holderness Road, there was a smattering of sleet, but in the high ground of Sledmere we discovered fields carpeted with snow - a good reason for some hearty food at a welcoming pub. What's on the menu? A typical menu includes dishes such as Sledmere Estate pheasant braised in Madeira with sweet potato mash, and homemade steak and ale pie with a heart- shaped shortcrust pastry lid.

  • England's Jamie Spence moved to within one shot of the lead before more bad weather played havoc with the Madeira Island Open. Spence was one of 60 players unable to complete their first rounds on schedule on Thursday after two hours and 20 minutes play was lost to heavy rain and low cloud.

  • BANGOR City's European adventure is over - for another season at least - after they were ruthlessly put to the sword by SC Maritimo in the Estadio da Madeira last night. The Portuguese side were lethal going forward and Neville Powell's team, who played the second half with 10 men after the needless sending off of Jamie Brewerton, eventually had the legs run off them by the pace and skill of their opponents and the oppressive energy-sapping weather conditions.

  • CROWDS of boys with little spiky haircuts practising their football skills are a common sight on the narrow streets of the Madeiran capital Funchal. If I squinted I could almost imagine one of them was a young Cristiano Ronaldo.

...Madeira's unpredictable weather hit the headlines earlier this year, when the isla...
