Most people have some concept of Thailand - golden temples, silver sands, internet brides perhaps. Vietnam conjures up images of slender young women dressed in the traditional cheongsam, and the war with America. Cambodia fascinates with its temple-to-end-all- temples complex at Angkor Wat and shocks with its Khmer Rouge casualties. Java and Sumatra remain enigmatic but Indonesia is on the awareness map, thanks to Bali, and its hypnotic Gamelan music.
But Malaysia? Despite once being part of the British empire, it remains a mystery. Malaysia barely registers on the western world's radar because it's a pretty peaceful place, an apparently harmonious multi-racial mix of native Malay, Indian and Chinese populations who seem to get along nicely most of the time.
