  • HAVING once shown Whippets, minus the flat cap, and spent days at championship dog shows attempting to qualify for that beacon of Doggy-Dom Crufts (managed it twice, qualified, went, returned rosette-less) my eyebrows raised on seeing a poster bearing the words Canina plastered across a hoarding.   • Cornwall Sheepdog Society had a busy weekend, with trials on Saturday and Sunday. The Boconnoc Trial was held in a small parkland field with an outrun of 250 yards. T Hopper of Veryan judged 17 dogs in the Maltese Cross contests. The Novice Maltese Cross was won by A Bennet (Hewas Water) with Jim, scoring 72 points out of 90. Second was W Evans (Virginstow) with Merc on 64. The Open Maltese Cross was won by R Watson (Holsworthy) with Lad on 84. Second was N Dalgarno (Tregony) with Esk on 74.

  • The Wadebridge Trial was moved from Davidstow to John Carter's trial field at Trethern. Twenty dogs were judged in the Combined Maltese Cross and 29 dogs in the Combined Driving. The running was on recently shorn Mule shearlings, which as they where used through the nursery season, where easy to work. Mr Carter judged 11 Novice dogs and nine Open dogs in the Maltese Cross, with T Hopper taking the lead with Tweed by losing only six points to the cross and then two through the cross and one point each for the shed and pen, only to be beaten by G Watson with Mirk. He only lost five points to the cross and then one point through the cross and one at the shed, with a clean pen. Mr Hopper judged 13 Novice dogs and 16 Open dogs in the Combined Driving class.
