In none of these cases did occupying forces play a role. In Germany and Japan, after the Second World War, they helped establish an environment in which democratic traditions could revive. In Japan, General Mac Arthur's radical land reform was important in creating a new social environment. In Cuba, Haiti and the Philippines, the outcome of US occupation was more mixed. In Bosnia and Kosovo, the story is not yet over.

RAF fighter planes were last night deploying to the Mediterranean in preparation for expected military action to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya.
Prime Minister David Cameron ordered the launch of a mission codenamed Operation Ellamy after the United Nations Security Council approved a resolution authorising "all necessary measures" short of military occupation to protect civilians in Libya against the forces of dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

COULD someone please tell me why Trocaire is demanding a boycott of Israeli goods? Specifically, the charity is campaigning for an EU- wide ban on imports from 'Israeli settlements'.
According to its executive director Justin Kilcullen, goods that 'are produced on the back of house demolitions, land confiscation, racial segregation and military occupation must be banned so as not to provide economic support to the illegal settlements'.

SINCE Barack Obama's re-election last week, my email account has turned into something like a counselling helpline for distressed Americans. Check the inbox: 'My mood has been bleak since Tuesday. All the conservatives are trying to rally each other, with various rationales. I will continue to fight, but with the spirit of a kamikaze pilot, not because of active hope.' Another: 'In a time of mortal danger - economic, social, cultural, educational, and military - I am certainly glad that we chose an America-hating, Muslim-sympathizing, economy-destroying, preposterous, lying, incompetent poseur as President.' One email arrived without comment, just a link to a news report from Rawalpindi: the owner of a flag business said Obama's reelection was good for business because there would be mo...

RAF fighter planes were yesterday deploying to the Mediterranean in preparation for expected military action to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya. Prime Minister David Cameron ordered the launch of a mission codenamed Operation Ellamy after the United Nations Security Council approved a resolution authorising "all necessary measures" short of military occupation to protect civilians in Libya against the forces of dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
The Gaddafi regime responded by announcing an immediate ceasefire and "the stoppage of all military operations". Speaking in Tripoli, foreign minister Mussa Kussa declared that the regime recognised it was obliged to accept the resolution.

LAST Monday marked the 374th death on the faraway battlefield of Afghanistan. On Saturday the family of Newcastle's Private Gareth Bellingham learned of the death of their son. Another terrible statistic in a war that has no logical end.
The statistics of the current war go back to the Victorian series of Afghan Wars when a localised hotspot was created after some territory and sovereignty was ceded to British India in what is now part of the state of Pakistan. The influence of the UK ended when Afghanistan re-gained some independence in 1919. Since then this nation state has been an endlessly troubled country. In 1978, an assassination-led revolution encouraged the Americans to recruit and finance Mujahideen fighters who opposed a Soviet-backed revolutionary Marxist council. It was par...

PRIME Minister David Cameron was today heading to Paris for talks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Arab allies as they prepare to launch military action on Libya.
Mr Cameron yesterday ordered RAF Typhoon and Tornado fighter jets to the Mediterranean to help impose a no-fly zone authorised by the United Nations which said "all necessary measures" short of military occupation should be taken to protect civilians from forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi.

Sahar Vardi knew from a young age that she would one day go to jail. Barely out of primary school, she took part in pro- Palestinian protests and marches that exposed her to the harsh realities of Israel's military occupation in the West Bank.
When she refused to serve the mandatory three years in the Israeli armed forces, Vardi was sent to a military prison for three months. Like other conscientious objectors, she now has a black mark on her record that will make it harder to secure certain jobs, particularly in government or security.

I AM writing to support D Murphy and Fiona Williams of the Swansea-Palestine Community Link, who have been detained along with many others by Israel for attempting to travel to the occupied West Bank.
The Palestinian people on the West Bank have been under direct Israeli military occupation since 1967. Since then, life for most Palestinians has become intolerable. Israeli paramilitary settlers have illegally occupied Palestinian land. Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been imprisoned, often without trial. Many children and teenagers have been beaten, shot and imprisoned for defying this occupation. Palestinian homes, orchards and farms have been bulldozed. A gigantic "Apartheid Wall" has been built by the Israeli state across Palestinian land which has further imprisoned the Palest...
