The idea of galloping across the wild expanses of the Argentinan savanna on horseback and rounding up cattle with the gaucho cowboys appealed to me from the outset. The fact that I was not a competent rider didn't deter me at all. I embarked on a crash course in riding (literally) at Drakes Farm Riding Centre in Ilminster and acquired some padded dressage knickers (recommended) and I was set for South America.
Argentina is an enormous country (20 times the size of France) and it's endowed with an enviable range of natural spectacles from glaciers to desert. Since it's almost impossible to cover it all in one visit, we concentrated on just the north and the east, flying initially to Buenos Aires. The horse riding opportunity presented itself when we arrived (via a twohour internal flight...

IF IT'S true that time heals -- and likewise that money buys anything -- then there should be no problem here at Chernobyl, which today marks a quarter of a century since a cataclysmic explosion inside a shoddily constructed Soviet nuclear plant. On the face of it, there are genuine grounds for hope. Each new spring inside the 30-kilometre fenced exclusion zone, known as Europe's atomic wilderness, brings fresh evidence of a remarkable return of flora and fauna.
But the homes in the ghost town of Pripyat -- just a few kilometres from the blitzed atomic plant -- remain eerily deserted of inhabitants, desolate Ferris wheel in the local park never to turn again, its gondolas creaking in the breeze, the nearby dodgem cars motionless after their final rides, as if time has stood still.

In the barren Gobi Desert in Mongolia one of the world's biggest mines is producing precious metals for the gold and silver medals which will be presented to the world's elite athletes at the London Olympics and Paralympics.
But that metal would never reach the surface, were it not for a 300-year-old company in Tyseley.

Martin Pistorius was a happy, healthy boy - until at the age of 12 a mystery illness left him in a virtual coma. Doctors never found the cause of his condition - even his mother gave up hope. Yet in 1992, when Martin was 16, a miracle happened: he started to regain consciousness. But he was still trapped in his broken body, unable to communicate. Slowly, however, he regained some control of his head and arms, and began to use a computer to write messages and operate a synthetic voice. Here, Martin tells the story of his remarkable recovery - and how he came to find love, a home and a job ...

YOU need a 4x4, a pass and details of petrol stations before you set out on the scenic desert route from Alice Springs to Watarrka National Park, home to the awesome chasm of Kings Canyon. During the daunting 450km drive, the Mereenie Loop Road takes you through the dusty heart of Aboriginal country. Strict rules permit stops in designated rest areas only, with visitors forbidden to undertake either picnics or walks.
Save for the serene sight of Brumby wild horses roaming loose and free, there are not too many signs of life here. The eeriness is heightened by passing Gosse Bluff, thought to be a giant crater created by a comet impact more than 100 million years ago.

HERE are more than 200 stores in the giant Abu Dhabi Mall, the largest in the emirate, and I seem to have found the only trader stunned by the idea of a haggle.
