As much as I love trying out new cars - revving engines, having fun, racking up the miles and then handing it back for someone else to wash and check the oil - there is still one thing that beats the roar of a V12, and that's food. I never tire of it, because there's always something new to learn. Sometimes what you learn makes you angry. I was at a dairy farm the other day whose owner told me nine dairy farmers are going bust every week. There were 20,000 just a few years ago. Now there are nearer 11,000. One reason is that male dairy calves are worth so little (due to stringent UK regulations on beef ) that they're either shot or sent abroad to veal farms with less stringent standards - and then we re-import 300,000 tons of beef per year. RECESSION has enabled a Devon manufacturer to steal a march upon competitors who outsource their production overseas. Tomorrow, British Ceramic Tile's huge new Pounds 40 million factory on the fringes of Newton Abbot will officially open. In the two years that it has been in development, the plant's production capacity has gone from strength to strength. The official opening of a factory three times the size of the original will be the latest milestone achieved since British Ceramic Tile was established here, 11 years ago.

While other people splashed out on decks and handbags during the boom, the only evidence we have that it wasn't all a crazy dream is that we now possess a box of Hallowe'en decorations. For 11 months of the year, they reside in the attic with the (admittedly bigger) box of Christmas decorations, but right now, they are all around me, little witches on broomsticks suspended from the light fittings, scary doorbells that keep falling off the door and things that go bump in the night (mainly because the big people keep walking into them).

• My Beef with 'Re-Wilding'

When the best Hilary Benn can offer the Labour conference is a fantasy centred on 're-wilding' the countryside, you know Defra has finally reached the end of the line. Here we are, facing the challenges of growing more food to feed more people on the same amount of (or possibly less) land at a time when the climate is threatening to become distinctly more unfriendly, and all our Secretary of State can find to enthuse about is bringing back the beaver or the elk.

WE are told the United Kingdom will build 7,000 giant offshore wind turbines by 2020, equivalent to one every half mile of coastline. To achieve this will require two of the 2,000-ton turbines to be commissioned every working day until 2020. Denmark, the world's largest offshore wind generator, has never managed to build more than two a week.
