(He has sensibly excluded Israel-Palestine, as so much is written about that elsewhere; and Iran because, as a non- Arab country, it is a cultural exception in too many ways.) He begins by setting out how, from an early age, Arab children are taught not to question at school, but simply to memorise and then repeat the one right answer: examiners will commonly not allow alternatives, even if they might be technically correct. Muslim countries gained political independence from mid 40s onwards. However, during the colonial rule, Western powers tried to replace the Muslim thought, culture and institutions with the Western thought and culture through all possible means. Muslim reaction to Western thought and civilization after liberation ranged from complete acceptance to resistance and total indifference. The dominating approach was of reconciliation which resulted in Westernization of the Muslim societies by the second half of 20th century. As someone who was born there and went enthusiastically through the socialisation and indoctrination process until my mid-20s, this reaction is all too familiar. Understanding the root of this furious and defensive response is key to comprehending the principal obstacles for peace in Israel and Palestine. One can best define this barrier as the offici...

IT IS Africa's forgotten heart, still thought of by many as the heart of darkness, with all the threats of violence and mystery inherent in the pages of Joseph Conrad's classic novel.
Blighted by decades of conflict, corruption and the greed of dictators and colonial overlords, the danger implied in Conrad's fiction is a reality for many living in the mineral-rich lands of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
