TALKTALK is to go ahead with an extravagant staff party in England at the weekend - and has even urged its 575 sacked workers to join in the celebrations.
The company says it has to fire staff in Waterford to save costs, but it will pick up the tab for the EUR 600,000 affair at a sprawling country mansion, including flights. Free entertainment includes surf simulation, a games pavilion and massages.

AS I stood at the counter, debit card in hand, wondering even at this late stage whether I really, genuinely needed an iPad, I swore to use it for serious purposes: no arcade games like Angry Birds, no simulation games, no hours in the app store in search of diverting gimmicks that would ultimately be a waste of time.
As I watched the money quietly disappear from my account forever, and gazed at the pristine white Apple box as it was tucked into the plastic bag, I thought: right, nothing frivolous from now on. There are lots of provocative news and political comment sites out there waiting to be explored, lots of them with cool video content. There are science websites, environment websites, campaigning websites, arts websites, all begging to be looked at on a portable device with razor...

IN a nod to the changing times, his brethren are sponsored these days by Specsavers. Through bloodhound, worldly eyes, however, Willie Young had no need for optical assistance in 25 years as a Scottish referee. He saw it all.

APART from Minesweeper, I've never really dipped my toes into naval strategy games, although I've heard there's a pretty big crowd of fans following their wake. So it was with a little bit of trepidation that I approached the stat-heavy graphics-lite oceanic battle simulation that is Naval War: Arctic Circle.
I'm all for strategy games, but only when the units resemble the little soldiers of my childhood and I get to order them into exciting and violent melees where tactics rarely get more complicated than the occasional outflanking manoeuvre.

PARALYMPICS Around 150 of the country's top disabled athletes are at the University of Bath during the next fortnight to get a taste of the London 2012 experience. The ParalympicGB team will be based at the university for next year's Games and athletes from 12 sports are currently testing the facilities during a two-week simulation camp. Among those attending the camp are multi-Paralympic medallists Peter Norfolk (wheelchair tennis) and Jody Cundy (cycling), as well as Beijing champions Danielle Brown (archery) and Matt Skelhon (shooting).
The camp has been planned in great detail to ensure the athletes get as close to the full Paralympic experience as possible, including arriving and departing on the same dates they will expect to do so next year. Areas such as training facilities will...
