IN VINCI, a small town a morning's walk to the west of Florence, on 15 April 1452, Leonardo -- famous painter, sculptor, architect, mathematician, anatomist and engineer -- was born into a family that had adopted the town's name as its own. He was the illegitimate son of Piero, a young notary (a lawyer of sorts), and Catarina, a local farmer's daughter. What a momentous out-of-wedlock conjugation theirs had been on 15 July 1451 or thenabouts, in the heat of the day or the cool of the evening, in a meadow of wild flowers, a hayloft, or up against the cowshed wall. Had they wandered off to the banks of the Arno, or were there snuffling pigs in earshot? Was it merely the lustful rutting of the young in heat, or the coupling of hapless lovers thwarted and divided by class and property? More...

IT has been dubbed the first e-election. The last time the country went to the polls, campaigning ran along conventional lines. Letter boxes snapped with leaflets shoved through doors, battlebuses thundered into town and no party leader worth the name would avoid raising a baby to the sky in the manner of a triumphant FA Cup winning captain. In other words, the usual opera of persuasion.
In 2005, newspapers had a strong and growing online presence and a small amount of tactical voting was organised online. But, in the intervening five years, something happened to politics. More specifically, Barack Obama happened.

VINOD HINDOCHA is burdened by a father's sorrow so deep it's hard to imagine how he will ever recover. His eyes brim with tears which sometimes roll silently down his cheek.
When I look at him I recognise something about him, but this is the first time we've met. Perhaps I simply think I know him because of the images of his grief-stricken face I've seen in the newspapers.

TUCKED into the Himalayas is a beautiful, remote kingdom where spirits are appeased, the mountains are sacred and there is only one major road. For centuries Bhutan remained isolated from the rest of the world - indeed tourists were forbidden to enter the country until 1974. Gradually, however, it is opening up - though it still has fewer visitors annually than Peru's Machu Pichu has in one week. What it lacks in quantity, though, it makes up for in quality. Discreetly, Bhutan has been becoming an A-list destination. I wanted to explore the country to discover why Cameron Diaz, Keira Knightley and supermodel Gisele like it so much they keep coming back.
Bhutan's only airport is in the town of Paro, rather than the capital Thimphu. The flight is suitably dramatic. Our small plane banks s...

THE small town of Braintree is not the most enticing location in which to steer your season back on track, but non-league has always been an unforgiving domain.
As Lincoln have so far discovered, the Blue Square Bet Premier is no respecter of reputations and tomorrow's journey south will becoS me another serious examination of their resolve.

IT isn't any wonder that Karen Robarge is cynical about marriage. One of the hottest divorce lawyers in New York, this is the woman who dispenses Kleenex and advice in equal measure to Bergdorf blondes and Wall Street bankers, from the eve of their uptown weddings and the signing of the prenuptial agreement to the almost inevitable rancorous break-up a few years later.

AS thousands of punters flooded out of Cheltenham racecourse in the wake of this year's festival, a massive operation began to restore the venue to tip-top condition.
Hundreds of workers hit the site over the weekend, sweeping up thousands of scattered form guides, torn-up betting slips and empty Guinness cups left behind by racegoers.

A SMALL town garden in Oxford is a world away from an eight-acre spread on the edge of the Peaks. But when Chris and Bridget Sheppard first set eyes on The Lilies, nestling in the hillside towards the top of the winding Via Gellia, they fell in love. Within three months, they had sold up and moved to the house - and garden - of their dreams.
We love this area," said Bridget. "We had been holidaying in the Peaks for over 10 years and decided that when our children left home, we would move here - which is what we did. It was a cold, wet, grey day when we viewed The Lilies but it was everything we ever wanted.

ETCHED into three brass war memorials were the names of men who had made the ultimate sacrifice for this country in the fight to defend freedom and overcome the rise of dictatorship.
But the plaques honouring those who had fallen during two world wars were tossed into an oil-spattered iron bin, on top of a pile of mangled piping and frayed cables.
