  • A FUNDRAISER has scaled new heights to raise thousands of pounds for some of the world's poorest youngsters. Stephen Flett, from Middlesbrough, rode through the Himalayas on one of the world's highest cycle paths. And his efforts have netted pounds 3,510.26 for Children Walking Tall, which helps slum and street children in India. "It was the toughest thing I have ever done," said Stephen, 31, now in Vietnam where he's taking part in a teaching programme. "The biggest thing was the altitude.

  • NANTWICH town centre became a winter wonderland for some fittingly festive fund-raising. Around 350 Santas ran through the streets yesterday morning in the town's first ever Santa Dash, organised by Sandbach charity Railway Children. Snowfall threatened to make the run a slippery affair, but volunteers were out gritting the route from 8am to ensure the safety of participants. As the sun came out for the start of the race, the snow simply added to the festive atmosphere. Runners could choose to run 5km or a more leisurely 2.5km, and altogether they helped to raise more than Pounds 10,000 for the charity, which works with street children in the UK, Africa and India.

Screening the final provided Magic Bus with an opportunity to highlight the importance of sport in the personal and social development of children worldwide, including that of street and slum children in India. Every penny raised through ticket sales is going directly towards our work.

  • Street children in India will be among those to benefit from a donation by the Diocese of Derby. The diocese, which represents the Anglican church in Derbyshire, decided to send the cash after a visit to Calcutta by the Vicar of Melbourne, Dr John Davies.
