There is always a statistical chance - fortunately a fairly small one - that even a poll conducted to the highest standards will produce wrong results: be a "rogue". So, when looking at trends in opinion, it is better to analyse a number of polls together. A single poll may be deficient in a variety of ways, but it is unlikely that all polls are getting things badly wrong. The accompanying graph is based on three Scottish polls at the end of March/beginning of April and three from late April. I know what looks good on me and that is as far as it goes. No one can tell me what to wear. I do what I like.' I had innocently enquired whether the multimillionaire Oasis frontman, better known for lager and brawling, might possibly have been influenced by his pop-star wife in launching a clothes label called Pretty Green. Clearly not. 'Pretty Green is subtle,' he explains, his wide Manchester accent unaltered by years in the south of England. 'No big stripes, nothing flash or loud. It's classic stuff -- trench coats, parkas, desert boots, nice cashmeres. Nothing wild, man -- just good clobber. It's more about style, really, than fashion because ...

Given the column inches dedicated to the subject you'd think there might be a consensus, but views are still divided. Economists are agreed that there will be a slowdown, but the question remains: how slow, and how far down? In its last quarterly economic forecast (December 17), the CBI put 2008's annual rate of GDP growth at two per cent. This was the third quarter running that the CBI had downgraded its forecast for UK growth in 2008. The downgrade was largely due to continuing credit market difficulties, record oil prices and weaker domestic and global demand.

And so this month we have included three questions asking satisfaction with the three main party leaders. As this is the first time we have done this in the South West Poll we have no previous direct trends to compare against and have to rely on other sources to put the figures into context.
