IT was bewildering to learn this week that double Olympic gold- medal yachtsman Rodney Pattisson does not consider himself to be Scottish. He made no move to reject the honour when he was inducted into the Scottish Sport Hall of Fame in the National Museum of Scotland at a glittering ceremony in 2002. He informed sportscotland that, like some other inductees, he would be unable to be present, but thus far there is no record of him having declined. Now he claims, in a soon-to-be published book, that it's all a terrible mistake.
Pattisson, first British yachtsman to win two Olympic gold medals, was born in Campbeltown in 1943 while his father was a RAF gunnery instructor at Machrihannish. Both parents were English and the family moved south when he was just months old. That has never been...

IT is hugely ironic that the people most dismissive of Margaret Thatcher's relationship with Ireland are those for whom she became perhaps the greatest recruitment tool. Her intransigence over the 1981 hunger strikes, the defining moment of the Troubles for a generation, politicised many who were otherwise antipathetic about the North and its governance - and it made many others take up arms and join a terrorist campaign she might just as easily have neutralised by showing a semblance of humanity.
In every area of her political life, Mrs Thatcher seemed so determined not to be judged by the traditional strengths of her sex - intuition, empathy, nurturing - and she abandoned them altogether. This may indeed have made her the Iron Lady of legend, but it left her relationship with Ireland ...

Sir Anthony Bamford, the most prominent private industrialist in Britain, turned 65 last weekend but clearly still digs every bit of his family construction equipment business; JCB is monogrammed on his tie and the teacups at his headquarters, and even on the antimacassars in his helicopter. 'I am very, very proud of our company, that we are British and are a world-beater. I believe in hard work and am here every day. I could have done nothing but I enjoy going to work,' he says. A Catholic who wears his faith lightly, but met Pope Benedict XVI on his recent visit to London, he has led an unsalacious life. 'The devil makes work for idle hands... we all know many examples of that,' he chuckles.
The golden glow around him and his family only seemed to brighten last October when David Came...
