TRADE is a crucial part of Gloucestershire's economy and as Britain looks to splutter away from recession, exports are proving key to its success. But how easy is it to take the leap and target your products in overseas markets? The Government's UK Trade and Investment department (UKTI) states businesses should be exporting now and firms in Gloucestershire and the South West are well placed to reap the benefits.

ON A WINDY street corner in Bradford, West Yorkshire, a woman wears a lacy black headscarf and touts copies of The Big Issue, the magazine sold by the homeless. She has travelled 40 miles across the Pennines from Manchester, where she lives with her eight children, to sell as many copies as possible at Pounds 2 each.
But all is not as it seems. For 32-year-old Contessa Calinescu is a Romanian gypsy and is not homeless. In fact, she was driven to Bradford from Manchester, where the rent on her home is paid by taxpayers via welfare payments. She also claims nearly Pounds 500 a month in benefits for her large brood of children.

Last month, I dropped off my two-year-old daughter Nicci Alise at her nursery during a downpour that lasted barely an hour. But this being Athens, that's all it took for many of the shoddily maintained roads to flood. As I navigated the fiveminute drive home, stinking bags of uncollected garbage sailed past in the torrents.
It could have been a scene from Slumdog Millionaire, except that I was driving past multi-millioneuro mansions with gilded gates and cascading bougainvillea in one of Athens's most affluent suburbs. The imagery was potent. Greece 2011: a country that has allowed itself to be capsized by its own accumulated waste.

A MOTHER has spent 20 years on Interpol's most wanted list - while living less than two miles from police headquarters.

Naunton Cathy Turton 01451 850668
My headline for last week's racing was 'What an Imp', referring to the winning horse Imperial Commander who won the world's most prestigious National Hunt horse race at Cheltenham a week last Friday, Gold Cup day. Naunton got quite a mention in the national press and on TV as the horse is trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies at Grange Hill Farm (any of you remember the barn where we had our first barn dance after shovelling out the muck). Part of the farm is in Naunton, but we had to share the honours with Guiting Power of course and a parade took place on Saturday morning at the Hollow Bottom Pub after great excitement there on Friday evening. There was a lot of pride flowing that night - the stable lads and lasses, all part of a grand team, the magnificent...

IT claimed to be the largest publisher of new poetry in the world and awarded itself the title 'The People's Publisher'. But Forward Press Ltd crushed the dreams of thousands of aspiring authors across Britain and Spain, most of them children.
It took their parents' money on the promise of printing their words and artwork but then went bust. More than 95 per cent of the company's revenues came from its Young Writers literary competitions, which were held in 31,500 British secondary and primary schools and nurseries.
