Summary


SANTANDER, which bought Abbey for GBP9bn in 2004, said it expected to cut as many as 2000 jobs at the former building society this year as it tries to raise productivity to the levels of competitors.

The Spanish bank was pleased with progress at Abbey last year, during which some 4000 jobs were cut at the UK bank's operations, including around 800 in Glasgow.
