Stories of war, famine, disease ... and hope. So ran the headline on the supplement to mark the December launch of our Africa 2003 Christmas Appeal in collaboration with Concern Worldwide. Hope, a word that means so much to millions of people across Africa in the year ahead. But hope is also something of an abstract notion, a maybe, a chance, a perhaps.

Fighting that deadly combination of hunger and HIV /Aids requires not just hope, but what Africans need most - action, support and the resources to do battle themselves against the humanitarian crises that persistently ravage their continent.
