SCOTTISH councils paid out around a quarter of a million pounds this year because of compensation claims by teachers injured in the workplace.

Figures released today by the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) show that assaults against primary and secondary teachers, as well as accidental falls and slips, are costing local authorities thousands of pounds.
