Summary

Yesterday, in the first extracts from Donal Og Cusack's searingly frank and moving autobiography, the Cork hurling goalkeeper revealed how - and why - he became the country's first elite sportsman to come out as gay. The three times All-Ireland hero told with great candour how, as he was enjoying a holiday with his team-mates in South Africa, his sister rang to report rumours back home of his sexuality. Anxious his loving, supportive parents and siblings heard the truth from him, Donal Og flew thousands of miles to tell them he was gay.

He told of his mother's acceptance and his father's initial struggle to come to terms with the news, steeped as he was in the blood-and-bandage world of Cork GAA and the close-knit he-man's world of Cloyne, where hurling is a religion and local legend Christy Ring is a god.
