WHAT a difference a year makes. Last September, waiving competition rules to force through the merger of Lloyds TSB and HBOS, Alistair Darling said his decision was 'absolutely right and necessary'.

Yesterday, as he prepared to dismantle this ailing Frankenstein's monster, the Chancellor struck a different tone. 'Unless we get competition we are going to end up with half a dozen big providers... and that would not be acceptable', he said.
