Dear Editor - Your recent article concerning the bid to convert the Retort House in Gas Street into an art-house cinema complex (Post, March 5) will hopefully stir into action the relevant people and organisations who can help turn this idea into a reality. It would be a tremendous shame if this opportunity were to slip through Birmingham's fingers, as it would not only help fill a noticeable gap in the market for such a venue, but also manage to showcase one of the city's lesser-known historic buildings.
The closure of the Electric Cinema at the end of last year has exposed how relatively poorly-served Birmingham is for this type of facility. The fact that the Electric building is being put forward for listed status comes as some relief, but it may be some time yet before it can be reopened and become a viable, self-sustaining venture, based upon the commercial reasons behind its recent demise.See the full content of this document
