Aston Villa were last night found guilty of making an illegal approach for exSouthampton striker James Beattie - but escaped serious punishment.

Villa were charged by the FA Premier League in November after Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe reported them for allegedly 'tapping up' Beattie when they made a failed pounds 6 million bid for the forward last summer.
