Summary


One of the biggest bills facing many middle-class families is the cost of university. I estimate my husband and I will spend about pounds 150,000 putting our three offspring through college. As 40 per cent taxpayers, we need to earn pounds 250,000 to find this sum.

And that is cheap, because we will only pay the higher top-up fees for our youngest. Even so, five years in, four more to go, the expense is crippling. To an extent it is our own fault. Sharing a horror of debt, we didn't want our offspring emerging from college weighed down by a financial millstone, which would prevent them buying a home, saving for a pension, or starting a family.

So we struck a deal. If they always worked and didn't get into debt, we would pay to enable them to surface solvent at the start of their working lives. If they didn't work, we wouldn't pay. Many middle-class families come to similar arrangements.
