EDUCATION, education, education, as a former Edinburgh public school boy once pointed out, is vital for future generations. Whether the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic, however, are vital tools to enrich the soul via offering access to knowledge, or are designed merely to build a world of model workers leading a good and useful life, depends largely on the attitude of one's alma mater.

Brendan Murray's new play for young people tackles this biggest of issues via a pastyfaced fable in which, over nine days, the most gifted of children, already talking minutes after being thrust into the world, has his inquiring mind crushed by a system that turns him into a gluttonous monster.
