THOSE charged with serious crimes will have to prove they deserve bail and are not a risk to the public under tough new laws being put in place by Justice Minister Dermot Ahern.

The onus will now be on the suspect to convince a judge he should be allowed out, instead of the current system where it is the responsibility of gardai to make the case that a suspect should not be released.
