BRITAIN last night ordered the expulsion of two Iranian diplomats from London in a tit-for-tat action after Tehran told two UK officials to quit the country on Monday.

In a move that signalled a deepening rift between the two countries Prime Minister Gordon Brown told MPs he had no choice but to respond after Iran made allegations that were "absolutely without foundation" against the British government staff. The two British diplomats had been effectively accused of spying by Iran officials, the Foreign Office said.
