Q. I have read details in your columns about cavity wall insulation and you recommend (if it must be done) to use foam or polystyrene beads. I have contacted the Energy Saving Trust and they recommend mineral wool, and say it has been used for years with no problems. My local council endorse on their website the materials that you recommend as a first option, and mineral wool as a second choice, yet they are giving grants to householders and companies that use mineral wool! I am confused to say the least. How does the average person make a decision on the best material to use?
